Thyroid Cancer Symptoms and Risk Factors

Early thyroid cancer may not always cause noticeable symptoms and is sometimes discovered during a routine examination or imaging test. Common thyroid cancer symptoms may include a lump or swelling in the neck, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, or enlarged lymph nodes in the neck.

These symptoms do not always mean cancer, as thyroid nodules and other non-cancerous thyroid conditions are common. However, a new or growing neck lump should be medically evaluated.

The exact thyroid cancer causes are not always known. The risk may be higher in people with a history of radiation exposure to the head or neck, certain inherited genetic conditions, or a family history of thyroid cancer. Risk also varies depending on the specific type of thyroid cancer.

Insight And Advice From Our Senior Oncologist

A diagnosis of thyroid cancer can create anxiety, but treatment decisions should begin with understanding exactly what type of thyroid cancer is present and how far it has spread.

Different thyroid cancers can behave very differently. Many differentiated thyroid cancers grow slowly and respond well to treatment, while some less common types may require a more intensive approach. Before deciding on thyroid cancer treatment, we consider the biopsy findings, tumour size, lymph-node involvement, imaging results, age, overall health, and the biological characteristics of the cancer. The aim is to choose the treatment that is appropriate for the individual patient rather than following the same approach for everyone.

Treatment we provide

We provide thyroid cancer treatment according to the type and stage of thyroid cancer, the size and location of the tumour, whether nearby lymph nodes or other organs are involved, and the overall health of the patient.

Surgery

Surgery is one of the main treatments for many types of thyroid cancer. Depending on the size and extent of the tumour, we may remove part of the thyroid or the entire thyroid gland. Nearby lymph nodes may also be removed when cancer involvement is suspected or confirmed.

Radiation Therapy

External radiation therapy may be considered in selected patients when surgery or radioactive iodine treatment is not sufficient or when the cancer cannot be completely removed. Its use depends on the type of thyroid cancer, location of the disease, and previous treatments.

Radioactive Iodine Therapy

We provide radioactive iodine therapy for selected patients with differentiated thyroid cancers after surgery. The treatment uses radioactive iodine, which is absorbed by thyroid cells, to destroy remaining thyroid tissue or cancer cells. Whether it is required depends on the type, stage, and risk profile of the cancer.

Targeted Therapy

We provide targeted therapy for selected patients with advanced thyroid cancer or disease that no longer responds to standard treatment. These medicines act on specific molecular changes or pathways that help cancer cells grow. Their use may depend on the type of thyroid cancer and molecular testing of the tumour.

Thyroid Hormone Therapy

After removal of the thyroid gland, patients may need thyroid hormone replacement. In some thyroid cancers, hormone therapy may also be used to keep thyroid-stimulating hormone at a controlled level because this hormone can encourage certain thyroid cancer cells to grow.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

01/ What are the common symptoms of thyroid cancer?

Common thyroid cancer symptoms may include a lump or swelling in the neck, persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, or enlarged lymph nodes. Some thyroid cancers may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

    02/ What causes thyroid cancer?

The exact thyroid cancer causes are not always known. Risk may be higher with previous radiation exposure to the head or neck, certain inherited genetic conditions, and a family history of thyroid cancer.

    03/ Is thyroid cancer curable?

Many thyroid cancers, particularly differentiated thyroid cancers diagnosed at an early stage, can be treated successfully. The outlook depends on the type of cancer, stage, age, spread of disease, and response to treatment.

04/ What is the main treatment for thyroid cancer?

Surgery is a common thyroid cancer treatment, particularly when the tumour can be removed. Depending on the type and stage, radioactive iodine therapy, thyroid hormone therapy, radiation therapy, or targeted therapy may also be recommended.

05/ Does every thyroid cancer patient need radioactive iodine therapy?

No. Radioactive iodine therapy is used mainly for selected differentiated thyroid cancers. Whether it is needed depends on factors such as the tumour type, size, stage, lymph-node involvement, and risk of the cancer returning.

06/ Can thyroid cancer spread to other parts of the body?

Yes, some thyroid cancers can spread to nearby lymph nodes or, less commonly, to distant organs such as the lungs or bones. The likelihood depends on the type and stage of thyroid cancer, which is why proper staging is important before treatment begins.
