Cervical Cancer Symptoms and Risk Factors

Early cervical cancer may not cause noticeable symptoms, which is why regular screening is important. When symptoms appear, they may include bleeding between periods, bleeding after intercourse, bleeding after menopause, unusually heavy periods, persistent vaginal discharge, pain during intercourse, or ongoing pelvic discomfort.

These symptoms do not always mean cancer, as several non-cancerous conditions can cause similar problems. However, persistent or unusual symptoms should be medically evaluated.

The main cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with certain high-risk types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Most HPV infections clear naturally, but in some women the infection remains for years and can cause abnormal cervical cell changes. Other risk factors include smoking, a weakened immune system, HIV infection, previous abnormal cervical changes, and lack of regular cervical screening.

Insight And Advice From Our Senior Oncologist

A cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but cervical cancer treatment decisions should be based on the stage and extent of the disease, not on fear. Early-stage cervical cancer may be managed differently from locally advanced or recurrent disease, so proper staging is essential before treatment begins.

Depending on the case, treatment may involve surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or a combination of these approaches. In selected advanced cases, immunotherapy or targeted therapy may also be considered. The most important step is to understand the biopsy findings, imaging results, lymph-node status, overall health, and treatment goals before deciding the most appropriate treatment plan.

Treatment we provide

Surgery

Surgery may be used for selected patients with early-stage cervical cancer. We remove the cancerous tissue and, when required, nearby lymph nodes. The type of surgery depends on the size, location, and stage of the cancer.

Radiation Therapy

We provide radiation therapy to destroy cancer cells in the cervix and surrounding areas. Radiation may be used alone in selected cases or combined with chemotherapy, especially when the cancer has spread beyond the cervix.

Chemotherapy

We provide chemotherapy to destroy cancer cells or stop them from growing. Chemotherapy may be given along with radiation or may be used for cervical cancer that has spread, returned after treatment, or requires systemic therapy.

Immunotherapy

We provide immunotherapy for selected patients with advanced, recurrent, or persistent cervical cancer. This treatment helps the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells, and its use may depend on the characteristics of the tumour and previous treatment.
